Film Production Process

Film Production There are many facet to film production for a movie or short film. There are three stages pre-production, production and post-production. Pre-Production The first process in film production pipeline, and very important, is the pre-production. This process begins with the main concepts which is the beginning of a full story, then develops further into the story line. During this stage things like story boarding and layouts that will start.
  • Story Boarding – helps with visualizing the whole storyline and gives the directors directions.
  • Layouts – Once the storyboard has been created, this is sent to the layout department which works in collabration with the directors to build/design the site and costumes
Production Once the storyboard has gone through its process and approved the project enters the “production” stage. This is where the real work begins based on guidelines developed during the pre-production. The major parts within this stage are layout, modeling, lighting, etc..
  • Layout – Director approves camera moves, depth of field and composition of the models and set dressing. The modeling department may be responsible for the prop sets..
Post-Production Post production is the third and final step in film creation, and refers to the tasks that must be completed or executed after the filming or shooting ends.
  • Includes the editing of raw footage to cut scenes together
  • Inserting transitional effects
  • Working with voice and sound actors and dubbing
There are three main phases of Post-Production.
  • Composting – this department brings in together
  • Sound Editing – assembling the sound recordings in preparation for final sound mix
  • Video Editing – manipulating and rearranging shots to create a seamless final product
